Course: Reporter systems in Biology and Pharmacology

Mikko kurssi shutterstock_332379212Mikko Airavaara, PI from Gloria EU FP7 project is organizing a course on reporter systems in Biology and Pharmacology.
Date: October 17th-19th, 2018; Place: Viikki campus, University of Helsinki.

The objective of the course if provide the state of art knowledge of current methods to carry out drug screening and how to develop and validate new reporter systems. The course includes speakers from National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NIH, USA) and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA, NIH), Institute of Biotechnology (UH), FIMM (UH) and Faculty of Pharmacy UH. Speakers have recently developed new reporters and who are actively working on this topic. In addition, there are local speakers whose research interest is in drug development and who has used reporters, and libraries in their work.

We organize a Cloning boot camp. It is an unique opportunity for students to learn the basics of cloning and carrying our cloning projects in efficient and high-quality manner. Students have a possibility to present their Example cases: An opportunity is given to the students (with their supervisors) to present their early phase reporter projects and to get feedback from NIH researchers. Only non-confidential data should be presented. The students are selected based on their motivation. The space will be limited.

Potential novel biomarkers found for fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis related pain

A significant paper resulting from the GLORIA project was published recently in Journal of Proteomics. The study conducted by several GLORIA groups at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, and led by Jon Lampa found several potential pain related biomarkers by analyzing the cerebrospinal fluid of patients suffering from fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. Their findings could be important for understanding the mechanism of chronic pain as well as for diagnostic purposes in patients. The full paper can be freely read here.

The neuroimmune signalling is different between male and female patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis

An important GLORIA project-based paper was recently published in Journal of Neuroimmunology. Eva Kosek et al. compared cytokine levels in the cerebrospinal fluid, serum and synovial fluid of patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. They discovered differences in the cytokine levels between males and females pointing out to sex differences in the signalling between the nervous system and the immune system. They also found that neuroinflammation in osteoarthritis might be a neuroprotective mechanism, and targeting the neuroimmune communication could be a novel treatment strategy for osteoarthritis when differences between males and females are taken into account.
